Well, according to the results of a Mayo Clinic study, this may be the case. Of 50 participants in the study, those who received acupuncture reported improvements in fatigue and anxiety levels, with minimal side effects.

This particular study seems to be the most successful randomized and controlled study to date, as far as measuring the effects of acupuncture on fibromyalgia symptomology.

According to Dr. David Martin, the lead author of the Mayo clinic study, "The results of the study convince me there is something more than the placebo effect to acupuncture...It affirms a lot of clinical impressions that this complementary medical technique is helpful for patients."

So, though the comedy-magic team of Penn and Teller may deride the benefits of acupuncture, it may yet be proven to be a valid and effective source of treatment for fibromyalgia patients.
