Free RadicalA free radical is an atom or molecule with an odd number of electrons in its outer ring. In other words, it is an atom or molecule that has an ‘unpaired’ electron that is missing its mate.
These ‘unpaired’ electrons pick up electrons from other atoms and cause a chain reaction that ends in substantial damage to other cells, causing them to function improperly or die. Because of this, free radicals can contribute to many diseases, including heart disease, by causing damage at a cellular level.
