ArteriosclerosisArteriosclerosis is a general, overall term describing a hardening of the arteries, resulting in inadequate blood flow to tissues and organs. Most often associated with heart disease, hardening of the arteries can cause a wide range of health issues depending upon which arteries in the body are blocked. Since arteriosclerosis develops slowly over time, the symptoms are not felt until the disease causes stroke, limb numbness, circulation problems, aneurysms, pain or heart attack.
Arteriosclerosis is caused by high cholesterol and blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and smoking, and is also thought to be hereditary.
