The ColonThe colon is also known as the large intestine and extends all the way down to the anus. It is a long muscular tube that is around 5 or so feet in length and is only about 2.5 inches in diameter. There are many parts to the colon, known as ascending, transverse, sigmoid, descending, right and left colons.
The colon helps the body to absorb water and minerals while also helping it to form and eliminate feces. The colon has around 60 different types of bacteria that aid in digestion and also has nerves that contract the muscles to help break down food. If your colon is healthy, you will have 2 to 3 bowel movements a day.
