Polyphenols are chemical compounds found in edible plants that act as antioxidants. Polyphenols help to defend cells against tissue damage caused by free radicals. It is also thought that polyphenols obstruct enzymes needed for cancer to grow in the body, thereby protecting the body from cancer development. In addition, polyphenols are thought to protect the DNA, proteins and fatty membranes of cells in the body.

Polyphenols can be found in tea, grapes, olive oil, wine, walnuts, peanuts, chocolate and cocoa, yerba mate and a wide variety of vegetables and fruits, especially berries.
