Isoflavones are a class of flavonoids that can be found in plants, most notably soybeans (soy), and although they are not classified as nutrients they are thought to have many health benefits.

Isoflavones are natural plant hormones that are constantly being studied by science. At this point in time, they are thought to have potential anticancer effects, especially for ovary, endometrium and breast cancers. They are also thought to help with prostate cancer, heart disease, bone health, menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis.

The chemical structure of isoflavones is very close to that of estrogen and because of this, studies are being done to find out if they interfere with estrogen processes. Isoflavones are natural antioxidants that can be found in red clover, tofu, tempeh and soynuts.
