StatinsStatins are drugs which block the enzyme hydroxyl-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductaste enzyme) in the liver that is responsible for making cholesterol.
Statins can also slow down the production of plaque in the arteries and reduce plaques that already exist. This type of hypolipidemic drug is given to people with atherosclerosis and others who need to reduce their cholesterol levels.
Statins are also known to reduce inflammation.
