DopamineDopamine is a neurotransmitter that is produced in various parts of the brain. It is found in both vertebrates and invertebrates and is classified as a catecholamine, meaning it is a molecule that acts as a hormone and neurotransmitter. It is a neurohormone that is released by the hypothalamus to inhibit the release of prolactin from the pituitary. Dopamine is also a medication that causes increased heart rate and blood pressure.
To increase dopamine in the brain for those with Parkinsonís Disease, patients are given Dopa (L-Dopa or levodopa), a precursor of dopamine, to cross the blood-brain barrier, which dopamine can not do. Dopa has had a huge impact on the treatment of Parkinsonís Disease.
