MenopauseMenopause is a condition that affects females, usually around midlife. This process signifies a natural cessation of a woman’s reproductive and menstrual cycle. In a natural, biological menopausal cycle, which normally begins around the age of 51 in Americans, the ovaries shut down and hormonal changes begin to ensue. This is caused by the ovaries producing less estrogen and progesterone, which are the hormones that regulate menstruation and fertility.
Symptoms of menopause may include hot flashes, mood swings, irregular periods, sleep disturbances, thinning hair, loss of breast firmness and other sometimes uncomfortable changes. Menopause may also be triggered earlier in life by a hysterectomy, chemotherapy, radiation treatment and premature ovarian failure.
